Young Gun Antonelli Dominates Austin But Must Wait For Crowning Moment

Kimi Antonelli delivered a masterclass in composure and pace at the Circuit of the Americas, securing a commanding victory at the United States Grand Prix. Starting from pole position, the twenty year old Mercedes sensation maintained control throughout the fifty six lap event, resisting pressure from both Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen. While the win marks his ninth triumph of the 2026 season and cements his status as the favorite for the crown, it wasn’t quite enough to mathematically seal the championship just yet.

The race unfolded as a strategic chess match between Mercedes and Red Bull. After early skirmishes saw Leclerc climb into second following a poor start from Verstappen, Red Bull attempted to gamble with a two stop strategy for the Dutchman. However, Verstappen’s charge was derailed by persistent engine braking issues that left him describing his car as undriveable. This mechanical struggle dropped him deep into the field, allowing Antonelli to build a comfortable cushion while sticking to a disciplined one stop plan using hard tires for his final stint.

As the closing stages approached, a frantic battle erupted for the remaining podium spots. Verstappen managed to claw his way back toward the front, engaging in a fierce scrap with Lando Norris before eventually being overtaken by a charging Charles Leclerc on fresher rubber. Despite the chaos behind him, Antonelli remained untouchable, crossing the finish line thirteen seconds ahead of Leclerc to ensure he heads into next weekend’s Mexican Grand Prix needing only two points to become the youngest world champion in history.

Further down the order, Lewis Hamilton managed to secure fourth place after passing Norris late in the game, keeping his own slim mathematical hopes alive. The day proved more frustrating for George Russell and Oliver Bearman; Russell struggled through penalties and poor pace to finish seventh, while Bearman saw his afternoon end prematurely due to first lap damage. Now focusing on Mexico City, all eyes are on whether Antonelli can finally turn this dominant run into an official world title.
